Bringing photographers together since 1936
Thanks to Bob Gwaltney, the following historical facts of the Fine Arts Camera Club of Evansville, IN were gleaned from Evansville newspaper articles. Anyone wishing to contribute to these facts please email email@example.com.
The camera club was started in1936 by Arthur Gress, manager of the photo department at Smith & Butterfeld. Mr. Gress, along with other employees, decided that a social club would allow local amateur photographers to get together and meet others with the same interests.
The club adapted its name from an early meeting site, The Old Museum of Fine Arts and History located behind the YWCA on NW Second Street. The club met at several other locations including the old Museum and the Community Center. As of 1984 it was meeting at Trinity United Methodist Church, 216 SE Third St. The clubs monthly club newsletter FOCAL POINT was edited by Presley H. Hill.
The Fine Arts Camera Club was affiliated with the Photographic Society of America. In 1990, the first meeting of the month was a competition among members who showed slides as well as color and BW prints. The second meeting of the month focused on learning and featured a slide presentation by a club member or educational material supplied by the Photographic Society of America.
In 1990, the president was Caroline Nellis.
In 1990, the FACC had 35 members.
In 1990, the club held an annual competition where outside judges evaluated entries from the monthly contests and selected slides and prints of the year In its early years the club sponsored an annual international salon held at Washington Grade School. Photographers from all over the country sent their works to be judged and exhibited at Washington Grade School.
